There are 30 leagues, 570 teams, 20 tournaments, and 12,620 players, all licensed, though some of the player stats are questionable. There is Manager Mode, where you take the role of an executive with full control over your roster, tournament mode where you enter a tournament, Be a Pro mode, where you can create your own player from scratch, upgrading his stats RPG-style as you go along, and more. All of these game modes do create an impressive amount of replay value, but unfortunately the multiplayer is local only, somewhat dampening the appeal.
Surprisingly, FIFA only uses two action buttons. A is pass and B is shoot, but you can do an impressive multitude of things by either double tapping or sliding your finger from one button to the other. Unfortunately, combinations such as A-B-A are extremely difficult to execute. The controls require some practice, but after that, they become easy with the exception of the three button combos. For movement, there are two choices. First, there’s a joystick, that frustratingly only moves in eight-directions, but is good nonetheless. Sprinting is accomplished by moving the joystick very far away from center. Then there’s the accelerometer option. I’m not sure why anyone would ever think it was a good idea, because the accelerometer movement, with a button to sprint, is just unusable. The gameplay is certainly among the best for soccer games thus far. Physics are solid, AI is fairly good, and goals don’t come easily or cheaply. In addition, the pitch is actually correctly sized, as opposed to Real Soccer’s mini-field. Sony has released the list of ten games to be given away free to new owners of its handheld entertainment device, the PSPgo, with a combined total value of €245.

The promotion, which starts on June 9, applies to European PSPgo units bought after April 1, 2010 which are then registered on the European PlayStation Network store.

Games for the PSPgo are available via digital download only, meaning that discs are not used to play games or movies, unlike previous models in the PSP line. Rather, the titles are obtained from the PlayStation Store and then stored on the machine.

The PGPgo itself is generally available from €200 to €245, depending on region and retailer, but can be found new for around €180.

Of the ten titles picked as part of the offer, LittleBigPlanet, WipEout Pure and Vice City Stories are among the console's top 20 games according to both Metacritic and Game Rankings.

The obvious duffer of the group appears to be Avatar: The Game, a tie-in to James Cameron's 2009 movie.

From the rest, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is both the newest and most topical, as the soccer tournament starts on June 11.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo starts on June 14, and while Sony is guaranteed to make further announcements regarding 3D technology and motion-controlled gaming, it may prove too soon for official news regarding a successor to the PSP.

You're at the front lines shooting Nazis before they shoot you. Or you're a futuristic gladiator in a death match with robots.

Either way, you're playing a video game — and you may be improving your vision and other brain functions, according to research presented Thursday at a New York University conference on games as a learning tool.

"People that play these fast-paced games have better vision, better attention and better cognition," said Daphne Bavelier, an assistant professor in the department of brain and cognitive science at the University of Rochester.

Bavelier was a presenter at Games for Learning, a daylong symposium on the educational uses of video games and computer games.

The event, the first of its kind, was an indication that electronic games are gaining legitimacy in the classroom.

President Barack Obama recently identified the creation of good educational software as one of the "grand challenges for American innovation," and the federal Department of Education's assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement, Jim Shelton, attended Thursday's conference.

Panelists discussed how people learn and how games can be engineered to be even more educational.

"People do learn from games," said J. Dexter Fletcher of the Institute for Defense Analyses.

Sigmund Tobias of the State University of New York at Albany said an Israeli air force study found that students who played the game "Space Fortress" had better rankings in their pilot training than students who did not.

He added that students who played "pro-social" games that promote cooperation were more likely than others to help out in real-life situations like intervening when someone is being harassed.

Bavelier's research has focused on so-called first-person shooter games like "Unreal Tournament" and "Medal of Honor," in which the player is an Allied solder during World War II.

"You have to jump into vehicles, you have to crouch and hide," said Tammy Schachter, a spokeswoman for game developer Electronic Arts.

Bavelier said playing the kill-or-be-killed games can improve peripheral vision and the ability to see objects at dusk, and the games can even be used to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye, a disorder characterized by indistinct vision in one eye.

She said she believes the games can improve math performance and other brain tasks.

"You are not just passively watching Scarface blow away people," McKiernan said. "You are actually participating. Doing these things over and over again is going to have an effect."

Bavelier said games could be developed that would harness the positive effects of the first-person shooter games without the violence.

"As you know, most of us females just hate those action video games," she said. "You don't have to use shooting. You can use, for example, a princess which has a magic wand and whenever she touches something, it turns into a butterfly and sparkles."

Medal of Honor... new research shows certain games can help improve brain function.

You're at the front lines shooting Nazis before they shoot you. Or you're a futuristic gladiator in a death match with robots.

Either way, you're playing a video game — and you may be improving your vision and other brain functions, according to research presented Thursday at a New York University conference on games as a learning tool.

"People that play these fast-paced games have better vision, better attention and better cognition," said Daphne Bavelier, an assistant professor in the department of brain and cognitive science at the University of Rochester.

Bavelier was a presenter at Games for Learning, a daylong symposium on the educational uses of video games and computer games.

The event, the first of its kind, was an indication that electronic games are gaining legitimacy in the classroom.

President Barack Obama recently identified the creation of good educational software as one of the "grand challenges for American innovation," and the federal Department of Education's assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement, Jim Shelton, attended Thursday's conference.

Panelists discussed how people learn and how games can be engineered to be even more educational.

"People do learn from games," said J. Dexter Fletcher of the Institute for Defense Analyses.

Sigmund Tobias of the State University of New York at Albany said an Israeli air force study found that students who played the game "Space Fortress" had better rankings in their pilot training than students who did not.

He added that students who played "pro-social" games that promote cooperation were more likely than others to help out in real-life situations like intervening when someone is being harassed.

Bavelier's research has focused on so-called first-person shooter games like "Unreal Tournament" and "Medal of Honor," in which the player is an Allied solder during World War II.

"You have to jump into vehicles, you have to crouch and hide," said Tammy Schachter, a spokeswoman for game developer Electronic Arts.

Bavelier said playing the kill-or-be-killed games can improve peripheral vision and the ability to see objects at dusk, and the games can even be used to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye, a disorder characterized by indistinct vision in one eye.

She said she believes the games can improve math performance and other brain tasks.

Red Dead Redemption

The gaming community is gearing up for its biggest cultural event since the launch of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City eight years ago. That ushered in a new era of "open world" games, with cool soundtracks, multiple cinematic influences and rounded characters. Next week that game's creator, Rockstar, launches Red Dead Redemption, a sweeping open-world adventure, which is already topping the pre-order charts on Amazon.

Here, the player becomes an ex-outlaw making his way through a violent, lawless society. This will all sound familiar to Grand Theft Auto veterans. But Red Dead Redemption promises something much more intriguing. Set during the dying days of the old west, it's an elegiac investigation of a vanishing culture. As players ride through the game's spectacularly detailed environments, from the endless dusty scrublands of the Mexican border territories to the mountains of West Elizabeth, the sun realistically rises and sets in the looming skies. An eagle swoops overhead, its shadow falling across a corpse – a grisly touch Sergio Leone would have appreciated.

Game magazines have wondered for years why there have been so few western-themed titles, but I think it's obvious. Until now, the technology hasn't been there to replicate the scale of a John Ford landscape. It's much easier to model a skyscraper than a tree. Or indeed a cactus. This could be the first widescreen, giant LCD display cinematic gaming experience.

Perhaps what's most interesting though, is a sense of individual responsibility in the narrative. Lead character John Marston must find his own route through the madness of the Mexican revolution, and that might not necessarily mean perpetrating the sort of criminal carnage we're used to in the GTA series. He can help civilians in distress, and has an honour rating that rises with every good deed – the tabloids will doubtless be disgusted.

There is a step forward too in terms of storytelling and characterisation. While Grand Theft Auto is filled with comedy gangsters, Red Dead Redemption has wizened old snake-oil salesmen, cowardly drunks and educated prospectors scared senseless of the nightmare in which they find themselves. All are rendered in delicate detail – a long way from the jolting bug-eyed marionettes so often seen in games.

Although there is an overarching story, I suspect many gamers will spend more time simply camping, riding, shooting and foiling bank robberies. That is why Read Dead Redemption promises to have real cultural impact. Like the psychological thriller Heavy Rain, released earlier this year, it says that games really have grown up: they can present us with moral choices, they can make us experience living virtual worlds.
